What is Intermittent Fasting?
Intermittent fasting is a diet that revolves around eating during a specific time frame and fasting(not eating) during the other time frame. While there are several fasting options to choose from, including regular meals five days a week with two fasting days, alternating fasting, I chose the time restricting fasting(16:8). My time frame was 9:30am-5:30pm, this was an eight hour window that allowed me to eat three meals a day, and occasional snacks. When you fast your human growth hormones(HGH) increase while your insulin levels go down. When HGH is increased this allows your body to break down more fat and grow your muscles! In addition, when your insulin levels go down, this make it easier to get to our fat storage. Fasting also has impacts on our gene expressions as well as cellular repair. Cell repair is initiated and gene functions are susceptible to change. During the fasting period no food or calorie containing liquids are allowed. Calorie free liquids such as water are okay! Similar to keto, intermittent fasting can also cause the body to go into ketosis(body uses fats as sources of energy when the body is deprived of glucose).

Conclusion
After participating in the keto diet for the entire month of October, I found intermittent fasting to be quite the refresher! I get to eat any type of food that I want without a lot of restriction. After 15 days on fasting I lost 1.0 pound. This is a huge difference from keto, as I had lost 10.0 pounds after 15 days. Am I surprised? No! During keto I had limited myself to little to no unhealthier options because they had too many carbohydrates. With intermittent fasting allowing me to choose more carb-enriched foods, I am not surprised that I haven't lost as much weight. With that being said intermittent fasting is a great diet for someone that wants to take their journey slowly. Fasting allows light progression while keto is moderate to heavy!
